Adult Literacy

I remember attending my first Literacy Day in Ghana...

The special community celebration of Literacy in the Anufo language was being held in Chereponi which was a long dusty drive from Tamale. During the event, men, women and children exhibited their skills and received awards and certificates for their accomplishments.

My clearest memory of that day was watching one lady who stood up, walked to the center of a large crowd and proudly wrote her name on a blackboard. I almost cried with feeling how hard this lady had worked to to add literacy classes to her already busy schedule. This woman was being celebrated as having learned a skill and being well on her way to learning to read and write in her language.

When I saw this video of a Nigerian woman in 2025 who is attending adult literacy classes and now knows her alphabet, it reminded me of that long-ago day in Chereponi when I first saw the pride and joy in reading and writing for the first time.
