The Bible translated into Jamaican patois for the first time

As I read this article in the BBC news I rejoiced that the prejudices of "bad English" were being overcome and the Scriptures are being translated into the mother tongue of these Jamaicans.
It seems incredible that there could be controversy about such an undertaking, but prejudice runs that deep.  I remember a few years back being in the Bahamas for a conference with my daughter.  Whenever we heard local people talking to each other, we heard another language, but when they turned to speak to us as foreigners, they switched into American English.  We took the unexpected position to ask them to speak to us in their language and teach it to us.  It was difficult for them, as it seems someone had told them they were speaking "bad English" but as you hear in the video, it is not bad English, it is their mother tongue language, Jamaican Patois!  This story helps us to see some of the complexities and controversies that accompany providing access to the scriptures in the heart language of the people.  There are still somewhere around 2000 languages waiting for scripture in their language.  We are working as part of a movement to start a translation in every language still waiting by the year 2025.  Thanks for partnering with us!
