Most of us are very familiar with the Christmas story: we've heard it many times and in our own language. But if you'd never heard it in your own language, Christmas might not mean much at all.

This story, and those linked to below, is available for you to share with those you are celebrating with this Christmas.

Chinyenge is a Malian midwife. Her mother tongue is Supyire. She has been attending church regularly for 20 years, and hearing the Christmas story in the trade language, Bambara. But she doesn’t know Bambara like she knows her own language.

When the Supyire translation started, one of the first passages to be translated was Luke 1-2: the Christmas story. The first draft was read out in church soon after. When the reader came to the part where Mary becomes pregnant without knowing a man, Chinyenge stood up and said, ‘That can’t happen! I know about these things!’ It was the first time she had engaged with meaning of the Christmas story.
