What are key-terms

The Nawuri people in Ghana already have a New Testament and are currently translating the Old Testament.  The reviewers recommended changes to a couple of key terms to the drafted translation. Read below and ask yourself how these changes might affect how people perceive the sections they are reading.

One of the steps in the Bible translation process involves a reviewers committee as one of the quality checks for clarity, naturalness and accuracy of the text. The Nawuri Reviewers recently suggested that two key terms which have been used need to be changed for better understanding:

Desert used to be “kiperi sʋ” (grass land) but the majority of the reviewers suggested “ofuli su” (uninhabited place)

Valley used to be “ogee t” (cliff) but everyone now says “kanan tɔ” (plain land by a mountain) was a better choice.

These small changes are expected to deepen people's understanding of the scriptures.
