Vulnerability

Children's Literacy

There was a report from one Bible translation project that their volunteers are now more available than before, because they are currently released from their paid jobs. That translation project is the least affected of all for the moment. You see it below listed as minimal impact.

How Covid-19 is affecting Bible translation projects

The two projects with significant impact each have unique circumstances. One project was scheduled to start in April and that has now been rescheduled tentatively to July. The other one is a cluster of two languages which due to government orders, the translators can't go to their office to record their audio Bible translation.

That leaves twelve projects with some or moderate impact. One man mentioned to me "Covid-19 is affecting our activities directly and indirectly". I can certainly identify with being affected indirectly.  What is your experience of the pandemic like?
Another project worker aptly described trying to work from his village home: "working during Lock-down is really challenging in a crowded environment". However take a look at the neighborhood gathering at his house for informal literacy class in the photo above. That is flexibility in action. Having children's literacy class wasn't a goal until the schools closed down

One last project to mention, was to receive the Easter story in their mother tongue this
year for the first time and that has been delayed due to the pandemic.

Now here's how Covid-19 is currently affecting Nigeria in general.

Most if not all states in Nigeria have curfews and stay-at-home orders as well as bans on all but essential commodities traveling between states.  One Bible translation office is in a city that is now allowing people go to market three days a week, so the Bible translation office is also open those days to sell Scriptures.

Nigeria is 2nd to greatest social and economic vulnerability to Covid-19 comparing emerging market countries.

Now that I've given you a couple examples of how Covid-19 is affecting Bible translation in Nigeria, I want to give you a short update on the Kidnapping I mentioned in a previous blog post.
  • The Discovery alumni couple was able to move to a more secure location and continue their ministry.
  • The remaining captives have been released. At the time of release they were in poor health but by all accounts seem to be recovering well. Thank you for your prayers!

Thank you for praying for these important people and life giving Bible translation projects!
